Disney has released teaser upon teaser for Cars 3, and although it’s hinted at main character Lightning McQueen suffering a terrible accident, nothing has ever been confirmed.
In the new, extended trailer, the mystery surrounding McQueen’s potential accident is explained. Well, kind of. The trailer includes old footage from the original teaser, which found McQueen flying through the air, but also features new material that seems to explain what happened to the race car after he landed.
Like most people assumed, it appears McQueen is not dead. Based on the new scenes, the accident occurs toward the beginning of the movie and leads to McQueen questioning his future in the world of racing. After going up against powerful, younger and more technically advanced cars — like the new Jackson Storm — McQueen is forced to adapt to the new world in order to stay in the game.
Guessing that McQueen, the franchise’s main character, wasn’t going to die was probably a safe bet, but the first teaser trailer still left some people shock. There were reports of children crying in theaters after watching McQueen soar through the air, and even adults were left perturbed by the dark tone. For what it’s worth, Disney has always taken a dark and dramatic tone to its movies. Just think of memorable, sad scenes from Bambi, The Lion King and even Toy Story 3.
Cars 3 will be released on June 16, 2017.
